Hong Kong

Hong Kong at night from Star Ferry

Hong Kong offers visitors an endless array of delectable food, abundant shopping, and exquisite cultural experiences. Hong Kong is considered a Special Administrative Region (SARs) of China that is comprised of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Limited space for the 7 million people in Hong Kong has resulted in modern architectural buildings that make Hong Kong one of the most vertical cities in the world.   You will marvel at the impressive skyline.  You'll know you're in a vertical city when trying to get onto elevators during busy periods of the day.  You are ushered into the elevator by an attendant and packed in like sardines.  Don't fret

the ride is quick and you'll be at your final destination and on the way to your restaurant in no time.  The controlled chaos goes well into the evening.  People are out shopping and eating at the numerous restaurants, enjoying their time spent with friends and family. Even though the city is densely populated getting around is fairly easy if don't mind public transportation.  Cabs, buses, subway, and trains support the transportation infrastructure, however a great way to travel is by boat or ferry.  Take the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbor at any time of day and you'll be treated to fantastic views of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Stanley Market

If your looking for something to do on a beautiful day in Hong Kong then I suggest taking a trip to the south side of Hong Kong Island to visit Stanley Market. Take a bus down to the market and enjoy a scenic ride along the coast.  Stanley Market is a tourist attraction and can get busy but it's a fun place to check out if you have never been to an open air market before.  The market offers a wide array of gifts and souvenirs that can be purchased for bargain prices and make great gifts for loved ones.  Stanley Market offers a number of restaurant choices so you can take a reprieve from shopping to enjoy a bite to eat.

Victoria Peak

View at night from Victoria Peak

Another must see attraction in Hong Kong is taking the tram to Victoria Peak.  Commonly known as The Peak in Hong Kong it is highest peak on Hong Kong Island and provides visitors with spectacular views of Victoria Harbor, the Hong Kong Skyline and outlying islands.  If you take the tram up at night you will be treated to a light show that the buildings put on.  Click here to see a brief video of the light show at night from Victoria Peak.

Tour of Hong Kong

 Temple outside of Hong Kong

If you are looking to get outside of the city and see a different side of Hong Kong then I suggest taking a tour.  Ask your hotel concierge and they will be able to recommend a good tour for you to take that will be informative with great sights like Buddhist, Confucius, Taoist Temples, Bride's Falls, and outlying Fishing villages. The surrounding areas outside of the city are extremely beautiful and provide a great reprieve from the hustle of the city.  People living in the city often flock to parks and green areas for picnics and barbecue's.

Food

One of the highlights of the trip was eating some great food. My favorite was Dim Sum. For those of you that don't know Dim Sum is typically small bite sized food like rice noodle roll, steamed buns, dumplings, and much more. Dim Sum is a great way to try different foods and enjoy tea with the company you are with. Just remember that at Dim Sum it is customary to fill others tea before you own.

Another traditional Hong Kong meal that I was lucky enough to try was Congee.  Congee is a rice porridge that is made from boiling rice in water until it turns into a thick porridge.  Typically congee is served for breakfast and is a hearty way to start the day.
